Nicola Kuperus

"She came home early that afternoon, hoping to surprise her husband. They'd built the perfect life together; suburban home, two car garage, the perfect city to raise some kids. Lately he'd become distant, but her mother always taught her that a woman has to work to keep her husband happy. Walking through the open garage she absently notices that the leaves have gone unswept, something that her husband had promised that he would do on his one day off this week. Marching into the house the faint sounds of love making emanate from the bedroom. She turns the corner only to find her husband and her best friend in the throes of passion.

A blood curdling yell passes her lips as she turns and runs toward the garage to run out to the cool fall air. Her husband pulls himself off her best friend then chases the woman down the hallway calling out his empty apologies. Running past the kitchen he pushes the button of the garage door opener and the small engine warms up and twists its screws slowly lowering the door. The woman, now simultaneously crying and screaming obscenities back at her husband, doesn't notice the slow crawl of the garage door before it's too late. She slams her head and collapses to the floor as the garage door comes down on her."

Let's talk about something I love: contemporary photography. It is easy to recognize Nicola Kuperus' photography. Often monochromatic which include the background, the clothes and all the objects involved in the image, with an old-fashioned lady-like style and with her models in stiff and awkward positions. Most pictures include a sense of mystery, and each photo tells a unique tale of murder, death, incest, love, desperation, or any other dark theme, as if it wereas a movie. In a 2009 interview she said: "I'm inspired by how ridiculous life is sometimes. I can also be inspired by a great film, painting, or record, equally as much as by something really dreadful." I love how you can make a lot of stories with her photos ... Why is 'she' there?, what is 'she' thinking? What is 'she' going to do? ... By 'she' I refer to the model, because you cannot see the face, you will never know if is Nicola, one of her friends, a model, or a random housewife. Knowing the background of Nicola's life makes it easier and more interesting, because you can actually feel the essence of the concept in the images.

"Ella llego a casa temprano esa tarde, con la esperanza de sorprender a su marido con el cual había construido la vida perfecta; Casa en los suburbios, garaje para dos coches, la ciudad perfecta para criar niños. Últimamente se había vuelto distante, pero su madre le enseñó siempre que una mujer tiene que trabajar para mantener feliz a su marido. Caminando por el garaje abierto distraída se da cuenta de que las hojas seguían sin barrer, algo que su marido le había prometido que haría en su único día libre esta semana. Entrando a la casa escucho unos sonidos débiles de dos personas teniendo relaciones sexuales que emanaban de la habitación. Se dio la vuelta en la esquina sólo para encontrar a su marido y su mejor amiga en medio de la pasión.

Un grito espeluznante salio de sus labios, se regresó y corrió hacia el garaje para salir de la casa. Su marido dejo a la mejor amiga para perseguir a su mujer, mientras gritaba disculpas por los pasillos. Corriendo por la cocina, el presiono el botón de la puerta del garaje y el pequeño motor comenzó a funcionar y poco a poco la puerta se fue cerrando. La mujer, que ahora estaba llorando y gritando obscenidades a su marido, no se dio cuenta de que la puerta del garaje se estaba cerrando. Ella se golpea la cabeza y cae al suelo, y la puerta del garaje se termina de cerrar en ella."

Vamos a hablar de algo que me encanta: la fotografía contemporánea. Es fácil reconocer a las fotografías de Nicola Kuperus. La mayoría de las veces monocromáticas incluyendo el fondo, la ropa y todos los objetos involucrados en la imagen, con estilo femenino antiguo y con sus modelos en posiciones rígidas e incómodas. La mayoría de las imágenes incluyen una sensación de misterio, cada foto cuenta una historia de asesinato, muerte, amor, desesperación, o cualquier otro tema oscuro y confuso, como si se tratara de una película. En una entrevista del 2009 ella dijo: "Me inspira la forma en que la vida puede ser ridícula algunas veces, también por una gran película, pintando, o grabando música, igualmente, por algo que sea realmente terrible.". Me encanta cómo se pueden hacer miles de historias con sus fotos, ¿Por qué "ella" esta allí?, ¿Que es lo que "ella" esta pensando? ¿Qué es lo que "ella" va a hacer? Y por "ella" me refiero a la modelo, porque nunca se ve la cara, nunca podremos saber si es Nicola, una de sus amigas, una modelo, o alguna persona al azar que encontró en la calle. Conocer los antecedentes de la vida de Nicola lo hace más fácil e interesante, porque puedes sentir la esencia del concepto en las imágenes y crear una historia muy parecida a la que pasa por su cabeza.
